preparations are being made for one of the biggest events in the Rotaract calendar  for the Science Faculty Rotaractors- “Esperanza 2011:wings of hope”.The committee has been quit busy for sometime with the work.

For the year 2011 the board decided to re brand the concert with a new logo design which symbolizes and reflects the slogan for this year’s concert.

As part of this re-branding a new t-shirt has also been designed.The logo design as well as the t-shirt design are the brilliant creations of Rtr.Udara Muthugala

The car wash as well as being one of the starting projects of the Rotaract year was the first project the freshers of the Science Faculty took part in.The following is an account written by Rtr.Chandula Walgama who is a first year student at the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo.

Tunel de lavado, is the annual car wash organized by the Rotaract Club of the Faculty of Science in the University of Colombo. Tunel de lavado 2011 was the first ever Rotaract project, freshers took part in which was held on the 5^th of November at Thimbirigasyaya, Colombo 5.

We were given the task of selling stickers, car stickers and car wash tickets about a week prior to the event. This was not an easy task at all, as we had several complains about the prices, though we managed to sell most of it, as it was for a worthy cause.

With so much of enthusiasm and excitement we gathered at around 9 o’clock in the morning on the day of the project. By this time the seniors had already arranged the place and were ready. Some of us were trying to stop the vehicles that passed by, whilst the others were involved in the washing. At the beginning we didn’t have much of a turn out, but eventually we managed to get so many! We had the music on and were waving flags, holding posters and banners, and some even were dancing midst the traffic! We may have looked like lunatics but we managed to get the attention of the passing motorist to stop and get their cars washed! While this was happening few Rotaractors were sent around to sell tickets. The seniors and the juniors we were working together in all aspects. Everything was done in turns, so we all worked equally and our presences were felt and by the end of the day we had a good turnout.

Though it was only about a month since we entered university, we were already taking part in a Rotaract project. Most of the club members were present and we spent the entire day together, this helped us to interact and to get to know each other better.

This being the only Rotaract project we took part in, so far, managed to create a great impression on us as to how the club functions, nothing was made to do by force, everything seemed to be so fun and exciting and yet so productive. It is no doubt that the new Rotaractors are thrilled to work for the upcoming projects.

By around 4 o’clock in the evening we finished our day with a remarkable ending. We had a soaking water fight with the remaining water and this only added more colour to the event. Car Wash 2011 was an epic success, and of course a very tiring day, but the best part was, we still managed to have heaps of fun and we learned to work as one.

The annual car wash was held in front of the B.R.C grounds on the 5th of November 2011.The car wash is organised as  a project to raise funds for the upcoming Rotaract year.This year the organisers of the event had named it “Tunnel de Lavado”.

The car wash was the first Rotaract event that the freshers of the Faculty of Science took part in,and the effort that was put in by the freshers was quite impressive.Surely this would be a memorable beginning for their service in Rotaract.

The event was concluded as a very productive and a profitable one for which organisers of the event Rtr.Dilan and Rtr.Thilanka should be congratulated.As with other years the car wash turned out to be a rather fun event towards the end when buckets of water started flying around.

Organisers of the car wash would like to express their gratitude to the Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof.T.R.Ariyaratne,Staff adviser Dr.Ramani, The Colombo Municipal Council and Sri Lanka Police for the support they’ve given to make the event a success.

Intuition which is a series of seminars conducted by the undergraduate Rotaractors of the Faculty of Science for the G.C.E O/L students of the Ampara educational zone was successfully concluded from 4th to 6th of October 2011.

The Science faculty Rotaractors took off to Ampara on a three day seminar series.The seminars were conducted for Mathematics,Science and English subjects and were held at the Uhana Maha Vidyalaya Ampara, more than four hundred students who would sit for the G.C.E O/L examination in December attended the seminar.Model papers along with past paper questions and stationary was distributed among the students.The seminars took a different approach than that of a conventional seminar, whenever a student was faced with a difficult problem there were Rotaractors around to help them with it.This fact was pointed out as a positive aspect in many of the feed backs that were received from the students.

The project was chaired by Rtr. Lakshan Darshana.The Rotaractors of the Science Faculty would like to convey their gratitude to M.P. Sarath Weerasekara, M.P. Daya Gamage,Mr. Jeewaka,Mr. Amith Paranagama,Charith Dissanayake and the Sarasavi Bookshop for making contributions in numerous ways and helping to make this project a success.

The World Down’s Syndrome day commemorations was organised by the Kosala Dullewa Foundation along with the Institute based Rotaract clubs of the the RI district 3220.The event was held on 21st of march at the Royal College,Colombo 07.

An awareness walk,health camp and art exhibition along with a talent show by the children was among the events of the day.The awareness walk started from the Faculty of Science of University of Colombo and ended Royal College.

The annual Car Wash for the year 2010/2011 was held near the Henry Pediris grounds recently.The car wash is held as a project to raise funds for the club each year.Many Rotaractors from other clubs of the district also attended and helped the project.

The event turned out to be a profitable one for the clubs account and brought loads of fun to the Rotaractors.

Nemesis rocked the night at Esperenza 2010 and the crowd simply loved it.Mihindu Ariyarathne of Nemesis is seen playing the guitar meditatively

Mihindu is also a fellow student of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo.Music is only one aspect he has got the talent for,he is also a member of the university Cricket team.Hope to see more of Nemesis and Mihindu in Experanza 2011

The 8th Installation ceremony of the RC Faculty of Science, University of Colombo was held at the J.R.Jayawardane center in Colombo.Rtr. Akila Chandrasiri was inducted as the president for the year 2010/2011.

The event was organized by the first year Rotaractors of the club.

The Rotaract year 2009/2010 saw the light of a new project initiated by the science faculty club in the name of Esperanza-meaning “hope” in spanish.The event was an extravagant musical concert with performances from artists like B&s,Billy,Battery,Wagon Park and many more.

Esperanza was held on 19th of December 2010 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium, and was concluded successfully exceeding the expectations of the organizing committee.
